Mark Hamill To Reprise Joker Role for Animated Feature

Mark Hamill’s Joker is coming out of retirement for one last laugh.

It was announced Monday the artist formerly known as Luke Skywalker will voice Mr. J once again for DC’s Animated version of “The Killing Joke.”

Plans to finally make an animated feature of Alan Moore’s classic graphic novel had been unvelied earlier this month at San Diego Comic Con.

While he had retired The Joker in 2011 after voicing the Clown Prince of Crime in the “Arkham City” video game, Hamill had reportedly expressed interest in returning to the role if “The Killing Joke” were to be made into an animated feature.

Not only did Hamill and fans alike get their wish, but according to Collider, Hamill has already recorded his voice for the feature.

The film will be released direct-to-video next year.

Who’d have thought something so awesome could come from a story revolving around one bad day?

Trailer Feedback: Suicide Squad

Last week Warner Brothers Pictures and DC Comics turned heads at San Diego Comic Con when the highly anticipated “Suicide Squad” trailer was revealed to the public.

We are invited to the journey over filet mignon as Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) vaguely discusses her secret government agency A.R.G.U.S’s plans while giving us a brief history of what the Suicide Squad typically is; a random collection of super villains serving as pawns for a covert mission.

Upon Waller’s words we are slowly introduced to the criminals compromising the team with the focus being on Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Deadshot (Will Smith).

While there’s not much dialogue going on after the first third, we see enough action and twists that give us plenty inclination of what to expect next summer.

Throughout the trailer, there are snippets of singer Becky Hanson’s remixed cover version of the Bee Gees 1968 top-10 hit “I Started A Joke” playing in the background – an obvious foreshadowing of what we’ve all been waiting for.

Enter Jared Leto’s Joker, who’s seems to bring his own unique brand of sinister to the character on the big screen.

All we need to hear is that giant, menacing belly-laugh of his and we’re convinced.

Trailer Feedback: Minions

This Friday, the adorable, banana obsessed minions from the Despicable Me films are getting their own movie.

These little guys have been around since the dawn of time with all but one purpose: to serve the most evil being in existence. Unfortunately, their clumsiness and naivety contributes to the demise of every boss they have. This includes legendary tyrants Napoleon Boneparte, Dracula and the almighty Tyrannosaurus Rex.

With no cruel creatures left to cater to, the minions lose purpose and become depressed until three highly unlikely minions Kevin, Stuart and Bob strike out on their own to find a new boss. Their travels take them (not surprisingly) to 1960’s New York City when the city’s crime rates were on the rise.

Enter Scarlet Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock), the new reigning princess of evil- with plans to become queen after commissioning the minions to steal Queen Elizabeth’s crown.

Somewhere along the way Bob discovers free will and crowns himself king, but those interesting (and hilarious) details will all be revealed July 10th.

Minions looks promising. These little yellow guys have come out of Gru’s shadow and into their own with their cuteness, unique dialogue and incomparable brand of slapstick. The minds behind Universal Studio’s animation team at Illumination may have struck gold. The animation and color scheme’s texture keeps the familiarity and flavor of the Despicable Me series with a new twist that could work for anyone.

In all seriousness, Minions has the potential to be the sleeper hit of the Summer and a guilty pleasure for even the most villainous heel.

Trailer Feedback: Sinister 2

2012 saw a very unlikely horror movie blow the roof off of the supernatural world with a demon that uses multimedia and imagery as a portal to our world in order to brainwash children into murdering their families before joining his cult.

2015 looks to plunge into the inner workings of Bughuul with Sinister 2, in theaters this August.

While the trailer itself looks mostly like more of the same, Sinister 2 appears that it will focus more on Bughuul (reprised by Nicholas King) and his child abducting methods than terrorizing the family that moves into his den.

Sinister 2 seems to be delving more into Bughuul’s lore as well. Upon seeing him more we also see the children brainwashing Bughuul’s child of choice, culminating with the boy presumably filming a murder (possibly an initiation). We also see Bughuul’s history being briefly explained (although it could be borrowed footage from the first movie), hinting towards Sinister 2 filling in a few of Mr. Boogey’s blanks.

With one part Poltergeist and two parts Children of the Corn, Sinister 2’s trailer does show signs of a different direction but doesn’t quite look like it will shock us in the way the first film did. Having said that, expecting one thing from a trailer does not necessarily mean you will get it in full. We’ll just have to see.

However; Henry Hall’s “Hush, Hush, Hush, (Here Comes the Boogeyman)” still gives us the heebie-jeebies.

Trailer Feedback: Cooties

In our youth, there was once an invisible disease all little boys and girls had at some time in their lives called “Cooties.”

Essentially a warped version of tag, cooties could be brought on at a moment’s notice when one child would yell that another “had cooties”. Those highly contagious cooties could then be given to someone else by touching them and screaming loudly that said child now “has cooties”.

The only way to rid someone of their cooties would be to give them a “cootie shot” by making circular patterns on the victims wrist and saying “circle circle, dot dot, now you’ve got the cootie shot” before poking the cooties away.

But what if one of the cutest “diseases” on earth was actually a food-borne virus that turned kids into zombies?

In a nutshell, this is “Cooties;” a comedy-horror film that hits theaters just in time for class in September.

Elijah Wood (“Lord of The Rings” trilogy, “Green Street Hooligans”), Rainn Wilson (“Backstrom,” “The Office”) and a plethora of others star as teachers and faculty of an elementary school overrun with zombie children in what looks to be a smart, funny and adorable showing in the vein of “Zombieland”.

“Cooties” should have an abundance of great lines and cult classic moments. A trailer highlight is the tail end when Wilson cooly says “Naptime, mother- (shut your mouth)” before lighting a jumping jamboree full of infected kids on fire.

How’s that for a cootie shot?

Trailer Feedback: Poltergeist (2015)

This weekend horror icon Sam Rami (“Evil Dead” trilogy, “Drag Me to Hell”) and director Gil Kenan (“Monster House”) are prepared to deliver a modern retelling of Tobe Hooper’s 1982 terror classic, “Poltergeist”.

Our first glimpse of the film is full of Rami’s signature style of in-your-face jump scares, complete with slightly humorous teases. The infamous clown doll looks sinister as ever and is going to be a pleasure to endure in full effect.

The casting of the Bowan family looks to be decent as their fear and concern feels legitimate and does not appear to come off campy. Youngster Kennedi Clements is undoubtedly going to steal the show as ghost hostage Madison.

Jared Harris (“Pompeii”, “Natural Born Killers”) looks interesting as Carrigan Burke and may end up being a total badass from the sights of the trailer.

We are also treated to a combination of impressive visuals (restless spirits of the other side) and practical effects, which is always a treat as most films will rely heavily on CGI.

If you’re a fan of the Poltergeist movies or horror in general, head over to the theaters and shell out some coin for a trip down memory lane.

They’re waiting.

Throwback Thursday: Kevin Smith – Tough Sh*t

Director Kevin Smith was not born into money, in fact he is far from the “American Dream” prototype. However; he is the loveable mind behind such cult classics as “Clerks,” “Mallrats” and “Dogma” as well as other awesome films. Smith’s book “Tough Sh*t” is not just a biography, but an average Joe’s guide to grabbing the brass ring.

Smith describes growing up in the suburbs of New Jersey, his film career and its launch to meteoric heights with a little indie film called “Clerks.” The film not only exhausted Smith’s resources but everyone that he knew as well. Fortunately, it all paid off because the feature that was shot at its director’s actual place of work was picked up by the Weinstein’s Miramax and won awards at various film festivals including Cannes and Sundance.  This set Smith up for the creation of what is new the “View Askiewniverse” which ties in most of his work.

Other highlights include the trials and tribulations of “Zack and Miri Make a Porno,” directing “Cop Out,” and the infamous plane ride from hell Smith met at the hands of Southwest Airlines.  It’s not all bad, as Smith recants how he found a way to hit them where it hurts – Twitter.

Smith also devotes a lot of time thanking people – especially his wife, who he consistently harasses with hilarious terms of endearment and praise for her being who she is and looking as good as she does.

“Tough Sh*t” is one of the most straightforward self-help books you can find that just so happens to double as an autobiography. Throughout the book we learn about one man’s struggle from (as he puts it) just wanting some chocolate milk to owning an entire factory in the gut-wrenchingly funny way that only he can tell it. A great side note worth mentioning is that every chapter’s sub-title contains the word “shit” (“Chapter Three: The Shit I Made”) because every aspect of the book is life, success and the “Tough Sh*t” that comes with it.

Jared Leto’s Joker Revealed

It’s amazing what a little studio magic can do to a person.

In honor of “The Clown Prince of Crime’s” 75th birthday, director David Ayer gave everyone the big reveal yesterday as to what actor Jared Leto (Fight Club) will look like as The Joker in the upcoming Suicide Squad film.

White as a ghost, covered in tattoos, and a lone, purple glove (Michael Jackson anyone?). Of course, Leto keeps the lyric true; fully dressing himself with that deranged, Joker smile we all know and love.

In the immortal words of Darth Vader, “Impressive…most impressive.”

With teasers all month using the “WhereIsJared” and “SuicideSquad” hashtags, Ayer cleverly built global suspense before giving the people what they wanted. It’s safe to say no one was expecting anything this awesome or unique.

In addition to Will Smith announcing his role as Deadshot, Suicide Squad looks to be one of the biggest blockbusters we’ve seen in a long time. With Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant Man poised to take this summer’s proverbial cake, it’s almost a given that DC will be taking a larger one next year.

Unless Deadpool has anything to say about it (he always does).

Trailer Feedback: Batman V Superman – Dawn of Justice

The trailer for the film comic book fans have been waiting for has finally been unveiled.

Apparently, Superman has developed a God complex with Batman taking matters into his own hands (as usual) in an effort to take him down.

Upon a statue of America’s most iconic figure we hear how all men who are given too much power is corrupted in multiple ways before cutting to Ben Affleck gazing into the hallowed eyes of the legendary cowl before a glimpse of Batman emerging from some wreckage.

Our next shot is the showdown of the world’s most recognizable superheroes straight out of Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns;” complete with high-tech bat-suit.

Cyber Bat-Fleck then utters the words “Tell me, do you bleed? You will,” before we cut to the graphic.

While we don’t exactly know what the plot is we have definitely seen some potential key development in why our heroes are fighting. However, we know the film is not going to be about them fighting alone. Regardless, we are definitely interested and are looking very forward to another trailer.

Well played Hollywood, well played.
