With the addition of two new podcasts to its roster, The Bonesaw has officially become a podcasting network. In addition to managing the website, as well as other forms of future media, The Bonesaw and its podcast network will collectively be known as Bonesaw Entertainment.

In late 2016, Bonesaw Entertainment launched its fourth proprietary podcast, the SSEP (Schorr Sports Entertainment Podcast), which focuses on professional wresting and sports, and most recently acquired HarpHouse, a harmonica-themed podcast which focuses on theory and all aspects of jazz and blues music as well as harmonica techniques.

In the coming year, Bonesaw Entertainment looks to expand on its network of podcasts with more content focusing on more categories as well as develop relationships with sponsors and advertising.

“We are excited to have Connor and HarpHouse join the Bonesaw Entertainment family,” CEO and Editor-In-Chief Chris Butera. “We eagerly anticipate all the awesome goals we can accomplish to help Bonesaw Entertainment fully realize its potential and give a platform for all the little guys in their quest in becoming the voices of a generation.”

“It is going to be great collaborating with the Bonesaw Team,” said Connor Frontera, creator of HarpHouse and Seydel Harmonica endorsee. “Bringing together all of these outstanding individuals will add another, very positive, dimension to HarpHouse.”

Bonesaw Entertainment’s podcasts can be heard on SoundCloud, Stitcher, iTunes and TuneIn. Donations can be pledged via Patreon.

Bonesaw’s Top Non-Metal Shows of 2016

Although 2017 has finally arrived, we’re still not done with our best shows of 2016 countdown. Being metalheads, we tend to be a little more diverse than most give us credit for. To polish off our countdown, here are our favorite non-metal shows of last year – with hopefully many more to come in the new year.
Chris – Cypress Hill and Naughty by Nature at Terminal 5
Chris: I caught Cypress Hill and Naughty By Nature for their annual Halloween tour. They ruled and the place reeked of weed to the point where I reeked of weed even though I stuck to beer. You could not get away from it. My only complaint was that it was my first rap show and there were mostly white people there.
Anthony: My first rap show was Hopsin two years ago and he had mostly white people watching him. Oddly enough, it was the same type of crowd when I saw Mobb Deep.
Chris: Oh Hopsin is amazing. I’d love to see him. Such a talented guy. Perhaps I will get him on the pod in 2017.
Birdman – The Beach Boys and The Temptations at Bethel Woods

Anthony: Nice. Bethel Woods is such a cool place.
Lyon: And historic.
Birdman: Went more for The Temps, and was disappointed that this wasn’t a co-headlining tour even though it was marketed as the “Surf and Soul” tour.
Anthony: That happens a lot I’ve noticed.
Birdman: The Temps played all their hits and I bought a shirt of theirs. They had two. Meanwhile, The Beach Boys had two dozen designs.
Anthony: You should wear that when you play in Roargh! How did The Beach Boys sound for their age?
Birdman: On point. Their set was in chronological order.
 Lyon: Sick.
Birdman: Problem is my dad was getting tired and we left as they were just beginning the songs from Pet Sounds. Mike Love’s a great frontman even if he’s no Brian Wilson.

Tony – Prophets of Rage at Barclay’s Center

Lyon: Oh awesome! I was hoping they would be good.
Anthony: The two openers weren’t my thing but this show was basically equal to seeing Rage Against the Machine, Public Enemy and Cypress Hill on one bill since they played tracks from all three.
Lyon: Any originals?
Anthony: No, I don’t think they had any at the time. But it was cool to hear all three acts classics.
Birdman: Must’ve been. They have an EP out.
Anthony: That EP is mostly covers. There is an original song on it but they didn’t play it. Maybe they want to wait until they have an album. Mid-set they even had B-Real and Chuck D walk into the audience and rap Cypress and Public Enemy songs with the DJ doing the beats.
Birdman: Sick.
Lyon – Bad Religion with Against Me at Irving Plaza

Lyon: I’m not the biggest fan of the first band, but I understand why people are and everyone was really digging their set. Bad Religion is still fucking amazing and I pitted ’till I couldn’t pit no more.
Birdman: Bad Religion’s a band I really wanna see.
Anthony: Does Bad Religion still play a decent amount of their 80’s stuff?
Lyon: They sure do. It’s my second time seeing them.
Antony: Nice. I’m sure hearing “We Are Only Going to Die…” live would give me Tony Hawk memories.
Birdman: Any chance they played “Leaders and Followers?” Brings back another type of memory.
Lyon: Their energy is unmatched and every song is like, “Oh shit.” They played most of Generator, a few songs from True North, a few Against the Grain and some other sick shit.

Spaceman Frank Ranks WWE’s 2016 PPV’s

36561eef964a99ba46bd614dd310f419

by Frank Lucci

2016 was a very up and down year for WWE live specials. While the company has one of the most talented rosters they have ever had, but oftentimes the booking and build makes PPV matches transparent and predictable. So while many matches are of high quality, the endings sour the overall match. Call it the Lost effect. Another big factor in the up and down year for WWE is the sheer amount of events the company put on, which can be intimidating to people trying to catch of or find highlights from the year. Fortunately, Spaceman Frank is here to rank every single main roster WWE live specials (no Takeovers here cause they would pretty much fill up all the top spots) and give his highs and lows from the events.

Royal Rumble

This was one of the best events of the year, and since it came first it gave me plenty of hope for the upcoming year. Sure, it would have been difficult to match the dumpster fires of the previous two years. But with Reigns walking in as champ the doubt was there. Between the stellar Ambrose vs. Owens last man standing match to Alberto Del Rio’s best match of his second WWE versus Kalisto the undercard delivered. Then the Rumble was full of amazing moments from AJ Styles debuting to Zayn charging in to take out Owens to Triple H hoofing out Reigns as I screamed profanities at sad sack Reigns, this is an easy PPV to rewatch.

Highlights: Owens vs. Ambrose, Del Rio vs. Kalisto, Rumble Match

Lowlights: League of Nations failing to eliminate Reigns, Reigns acting tough in returning while Dean and Owens entered after a Last Man Standing Match

Extreme Rules

Building on the previous event Payback, this live special had many fantastic matches. The fatal four way for the IC title was amazing and began The Miz’s epic run as IC champ. Kalisto and Rusev had a nice little match as well. The New Day had one of their more memorable promos before their match which was better than their actual match. And the main event actually delivered with AJ Styles pulling the best match out of Reign with their extreme rules match. However, The Asylum match was pretty lame and Charlotte again failed to impress against Nattie.

Highlights: Zayn vs. Owens vs. Miz vs. Cesaro, AJ vs. Reigns, New Day promo.

Lowlights: Jericho vs. Ambrose, Flair vs. Nattie

Summerslam

On one hand you have my match of the year match with Cena vs. Styles II on this card. Throw in a great considering one member of the match had to pop his shoulder back in place bout between Finn Balor and Seth Rollins and a pure spectacle match between Brock and Orton and this was a very solid PPV. What was suppose to great was great and even the stuff that could have been better was at least memorable. Throw in Nikki Bella returning and a solid Women’s title match and there is a lot to like here. Mostly makes up for the long run time, though Miz vs Crews did nobody any favors and The New Day vs. The Club match being when the latter team officially went off the rails. Easy enough to skip the filler however especially if you ignore the pre-show.

Highlights: Cena vs. Styles II, Rollins vs. Balor, Banks vs. Charlotte, Orton vs. Lesnar

Lowlights: Miz vs. Crews, The Club vs. The New Day, Ambrose vs. Ziggler

Backlash

The first SmackDown exclusive PPV was memorable, which is why it is high on this list. When the WWE crams as many live specials as possible into the calendar many PPVs just do not feel like they are significant. Yet this one had the crowning of multiple new champions, and in matches that were fantastic to boot. Sure the Wyatt vs. Orton match got cancelled last minute and we had to sit through Bray westling Kane instead, but that was the only blemish on the PPV. Good stuff that set the standard that SmackDown Live would dominate Raw.

Highlights: Six Women Elimination Match for Smackdown Women’s Championship, Slater & Rhyno vs. The Usos for Smackdown Tag Team Belt, Miz vs. Ziggler I

Lowlights: Kane vs. Wyatt

TLC: Tables, Ladders, and Chairs

While this was a pretty high quality PPV, there was many matches that were repeats. Smackdown can get away with it a little bit because of the quality of the matches, but it is a systemic problem in WWE. Miz vs. Ziggler III was great as a ladder match, and Ambrose took Styles to the limit in their TLC match that was probably the best Ambrose match of the year. The rest of the card was pretty tight as well, even if Nikki Bella could not figure out how to use a kendo stick the right way.

Highlights: Ambrose vs. Styles, Miz vs. Ziggler III, Kalisto vs. Corbin, Bliss vs. Lynch

Lowlights: Ten Man Tag Team Pre-show Match

Survivor Series

The big story out of Survivor Series was Goldberg destroying Lesnar, which is memorable sure but did screw over fans looking to see these guys actually face off in an actual match. Definitely something you do not need to re-watch again. One the plus side the men’s Survivor Series match was excellent and delivered on all fronts. The other elimination matches were also fun to watch as well and help reestablish why the gimmick match has worked over the years. Zayn vs. Miz was pretty lame though and WWE blew it by not having Kalisto win the Cruiserweight belt. Good for the gimmick matches but this will always be remembered for Goldberg’s return.

Highlights: Survivor Series Elimination Matches

Lowlights: Zayn vs. Miz, Kane vs. Harper

Money in the Bank

The obvious emotional highlight was Dean Ambrose cashing in and winning the WWE Championship on Seth Rollins less than two hours after winning the Money in the Bank briefcase. WWE finally put a bow on their epic rivalry and had an actual fan favorite win the belt and get a positive response from the crowd. We also got Cena vs. AJ Styles I, starting perhaps the best rivalry of the year. While there was many good matches there was also too much filler at 11 total matches on the PPV. Almost great but not quite there.

Highlights: Cena vs. AJ I, MITB Ladder Match, Ambrose’s Cash-In

Lowlights: Pre-show, Fatal Four Way Tag Team Match, Corbin vs. Ziggler III, Crews vs. Sheamus

Payback

This was a very good PPV marred by the usual questionable booking. Nattie vs. Flair was a joke that nobody laughed at. We got the beginning of the endless Ziggler vs. Corbin match that did nobody any favors. Plus we got one of the scariest scenes of the year when Enzo Amore got knocked out during his match.Yet this is a solid PPV that set up much of the live special content for the next few months. We got the first of the Zayn vs. Owens Fight Forever matches along with the best Ryback match ever vs. Kalisto (sensing a pattern with Kalisto here). Not bad but not the best.

Highlights: Zayn vs. Owens I, Kalisto vs. Ryback

Lowlights: Natalya vs. Flair, Ziggler vs. Corbin

No Mercy

Similar to Payback, WWE put on another event with weird booking. Putting the WWE championship match first was odd, and when it turned out to be the one of the best match on the card it definitely hurt the PPV. We also got the amazing Miz vs. Ziggler match with Ziggler’s career on the line, which again is hindered slightly in retrospect when they just reset this feud later on. Other than that not much here to get invested in or re-watch.

Highlights: Miz vs Ziggler II, Styles vs. Ambrose vs. Cena

Lowlights: Corbin vs. Swagger, Wyatt vs. Orton

Fastlane

I’m sure Fastlane was a decent show, but I honestly do not remember a single match from this PPV outside of the main event. Curtis Axel vs. R-Truth happened on this show for Christ’s sake. This was also during peak botching Charlotte time, and having Brie Bella as an opponet was not a good look for the Divas at the time. The main event was pretty fun though, and triple threat Brock is probably my favorite Brock. The Edge and Christian segment was also pretty fun, but too long. Very skippable and an obvious stepping stone to Mania.

Highlights: Brock vs. Ambrose vs. Reigns

Lowlights: Pretty much everything else

Hell in a Cell

We did some history here with the first women’s Hell in a Cell match. And Owens vs. Rollins was decent, and Reigns vs. Rusev can get a pass too. However all the Hell in a Cell matches diluted the quality of them all, and the rest of the card was just kind of there. More of the same from Raw in a pattern that continues with the red brand to this day. The best matches were things we have seen before.

Highlights: Banks vs. Charlotte II, Owens vs. Rollins II, Rusev vs. Reign II

Lowlights: Brooke vs. Bayley, The Club vs. Enzo & Cass

Battleground

Simply put, Zayn vs. Owens II saved this PPV from being a complete disaster. So many unmemorable matches or just flat out bad matches that were a product of the upcoming brand split. Cena and Enzo & Cass vs. The Club was ok, and the Shield triple threat was decent but nearly as epic as it should have been. Really this is a very skippable PPV that was screwed by the brand split and made relevant almost as soon as it was over.

Highlights: Owens vs. Zayn II

Lowlights: Miz vs. Young, Rusev vs. Ryder, Wyatts vs. New Day

Roadblock: End of the Line

The last PPV of the year was also one of the worse. Raw continued to just stall for time, this time to make to the Royal Rumble in 2017. Many of these matches just did not matter, and very little changed. Banks vs Charlotte had their best PPV match, but the Iron Man Match was structured weirdly. Cesaro & Sheamus vs. The New Day was also a solid match which ended The New Day’s reign, but these two things don’t make up for the blandness of the PPV. Like a steamed carrot this was as meh as it gets.

Highlights: Cesaro & Sheamus vs. The New Day, Banks vs. Charlotte III

Lowlights: Rusev vs. Big Cass, TJP vs. Swann vs. Kendrick, Reigns vs. Owens, Jericho vs. Rollins

Clash of Champions

Remember how Backlash set up SmackDown Live as the standard bearer for WWE? Well that notion was solidified when Raw dropped Clash of Champions on us. Owens vs. Rollins should have been better than it was, though Rollins did crack a rib so that is forgivable. Meanwhile most of the other matches seem to feature people sleepwalking through them or just meandering their way through the event so we could get to the next event. Cesaro vs. Sheamus was good though, and now that the best of seven actually paid off it is better in retrospect. Still would have liked to see a definite winner (Cesaro) who got into the main event picture.

Highlights: Cesaro vs. Sheamus

Lowlights: Jericho vs. Zayn, Reigns vs. Lana, TYP vs. Kendrick, Jax vs. Fox

WrestleMania 32

Mania 32 highlighted everything wrong with WWE 2016. The event was seven hours long, had too many matches, and a super predictable main event that should have killed the Roman push dead. Throw in The Rock to set things on fire and waste half an hour to let us know the attendance and murder Erick Rowan’s career and it is easy to see how this was one of the worse events of the year. I cannot imagine how disappointing this must have been to someone who finally got the chance to attend WrestleMania only to see this show. However, the young and hungry talent came through on the big stage, and the ladder match and the women’s triple threat match were great.

Highlights: IC Title Ladder Match, Lynch vs. Banks vs. Flair

Lowlights: The other 6 hours

Bonesaw’s Top 5 Metal shows of 2016 Countdown: Part 5

As we reach the final hours of 2016, we reflect on our top five best metal shows we attended for the year. While there were many, the final installment of this countdown rounds out our absolute number one favorites for varying reasons. As for 2017, here’s to more headbanging, moshing, and great times for all!
Chris’ #1: Carcass with Crowbar, Ghoul and Night Demon at Gramercy Theater.

Chris: This is mainly my number one because I never got to see Carcass until this point. Not only did that finally happen but I also got to interview Bill Steer at that show. He was a super nice guy and I got a free beer out of it. I was supposed to interview Ghoul but they have a lot of family in New York so there was too much going on. We finally did it a few weeks ago. Crowbar ruled. Definitely surprising as I wasn’t sure how they’d be live.
Anthony: Yeah, Crowbar are great live. I saw Carcass this year too but at The Chance with Inter Arma who were a nice surprise and Deafheaven who were…..ugh.

Chris: Night Demon was ok.  Too much of Anvil meets Motorhead. They were cool but sounded too much like their influences. I’m not sure why everyone loves Deafheaven so much. They’re just ok.

Anthony: Night Demon are pretty bland. A lot of newer-trade metal just sounds off.
Chris: My runner up is Conditon Critical and Game Over at Lucky 13’s. Mostly because Condition Critical are my boys and I’d like to think I helped break them in and put them over as they were on their way up. Game Over blew my mind. Very nice Italian boys. They were the second coming of Overkill.
Anthony: Mike is a cool dude. I interviewed him awhile back.
Chris: Yes he is. Can’t wait for the new Lich King album. Was also a pleasure to finally have them on the Thrash Bash this year.

Birdman and Lyon’s #1: Sonata Arctica, Dark Tranquility, Swallow The Sun, Leaves Eyes, Omnium Gatherum, Enforcer and Starkill at The Upstate Concert Hall

Birdman: I think Lyon and I are tied for our favorite show of the year so we’ll talk over each other.
 Lyon: We sure are.
Anthony: That’s pretty sweet. I’d love to see Swallow the Sun, DT and Omnium.
Lyon: Those three sets in particular were amazing.
Birdman: I guess the first reason it’s my favorite is that there was not a single bad band on the bill. Even Enforcer was mildly entertaining whom Anthony and I have mocked in the past. Leaves Eyes was a nice surprise as well, not too big a fan of symphonic metal.
Lyon: They do it well and Dark Tranquility is one of my favorite bands.
Anthony: They are one of my top melodeath bands for sure.
Birdman: And of course, that was a show where I got to interview three guys from the Century Media bands from that show.
Lyon: They played a lot of songs from their new album. The new stuff is great, they played a bunch of great old shit too.
Birdman: Omnium was definitely Rob’s favorite of the night.
Lyon: Omnium surprised me the most with how good they were, Swallow the Sun hits all the right notes for me too. And their set was long and great .Starkill was honestly really entertaining.
Birdman: Didn’t get to see Starkill because of the interview. Sonata was great to hear live again after a seven year lapse.
Maryland Deathfest 2016

Anthony: Didn’t go Thursday this year and I was sad that both discharge and Destroyer 666 dropped, but overall it was a great time and saw many awesome bands.
No locals unless you count the side bar as part of the fest.
Lyon: Sweet. What were the top three acts?
Anthony: Dragged into Sunlight, Demolition Hammer and Angelcorpse.
Lyon: Dragged is fucking sweet.
Anthony: Runners up will be Exciter,Venom, Hirax and Rotten Sound. I’m guessing this is it for the round table. I’m sure Mayhem, Nuclear Assault and Testament all sounded great there to. I skipped them for Magrudergrind, Infest and Hemorrhage since I’ve seen them all.  Cool chatting without guys going to try to get it up for the end of the year.
Lyon: I always try to get it up for the end of the year!

Bonesaw’s Top 5 Metal Shows of 2016 Countdown: Part 4

As we near the end of 2016, we also near our number one spot of our top five countdown of metal shows for that year. While there was an arsenal of spells, speed and sonic bliss, these are the ones that were our second favorite. For our number one’s, check back tomorrow.
Chris’s #2: Spellcaster, Exmortis and Holy Grail at St. Vitus

Chris: I ended up interviewing all three, meeting the guy behind Heavy Artillery Records and some hot chick who I went on a disater date with a few weeks later. They (the bands) are all extremely talented. It was really nice to catch up with Alex Lee as I hadn’t seen him since he was in Bonded By Blood when I was interning at Earache. He still does the crazy yo-yo tricks. And Spellcaster has been one of my favorite modern bands since their first album.
Birdman’s #2: Fear Factory and Soilwork at The Chance

Birdman: Plus a lot of unmentioned openers
Lyon: That’s likely the show I most regret  not going to this year.
Birdman: The Chance failed to mention Spades and Blades and Without A Martyr who were touring mates. I didn’t care for either of those bands, though Crazy Dan liked Without A Martyr.
Lyon: Diverse representation of sound has its advantages at a show sometimes, which I’m positive we will both mention again later.
Birdman: And it was great chance to see Dirk drum for Soilwork before he found his life’s calling.
Anthony: Dude’s in Megadeth now. Great job on his part.

Lyon: Fear Factory is, at this point, I would argue iconic in metal.
Birdman: Yeah, seeing them live put me on a Fear Factory kick.
Lyon:  They were one of the first really heavy bands I got into.
Birdman: Also made Demanufacture a must for my vinyl collection. Their drummer was kind of boring though. Wish they had Hoglan for this tour.
Anthony: Every band should have Hoglan for every tour.
Birdman: Bring out the cloning device.
Lyon: Yeah, if they made that stupid fucking sheep they can make Hoglan.
Lyon’s #2: Aether Realm, Nekrogoblikon, and Alestorm in NYC

Lyon: I’m a big fan of all three bands. The opener has an exciting new album on the release and the previewed tracks were great. Hilariously, Evan and I hung with Nekro during the show and did shots with them. Scorpion, their singer, actually took and listened to our demo, sending us constructive and positive criticism. It was a real fuckin’ nice and cool thing. Also, their set was amazing and I slayed bodies in the pit
(“murder” always makes pits better). Lastly, Alestorm definitely still has it. It was my first time seeing them since their second album. The new songs are a lot better live than on record. There were a lot of magical moments, and it definitely made up for the last time they came around and were down a guitarist and at a much shittier venue.

Bonesaw’s Top 5 Metal shows of 2016 Countdown: Part 3

If you’re still with us on this countdown to 2016’s extinction, congratulations! As we progress with our roundtable of top metal concerts from this past year, we get to our number three spot, and we’re sure to have you wondering what could possibly top these prime candidates.
Chris and Birdman’s #3 / Tony’s #2: Black Sabbath with Rival Sons at PNC Bank Arts Center

Chris: Number three is Black Sabbath at PNC Bank Arts Center.
Birdman: That’s my number three too. Didn’t know you were there. Sucked going there with just myself, but all that matters is I saw Black Sabbath before they stopped touring.
Chris: Yep I was there, so was Rob.
Anthony: That show is my number two, although I saw them at Madison Square Garden.
Chris: Not only was that one of the best shows, it was also the best possible birthday present, so thanks Dad. They must have sounded great at the Garden. Even though I edited your review, words can’t describe the experience of seeing Sabbath live. The only thing that annoyed me was that they didn’t play “The Wizard.”
Anthony: “Hand of Doom” – I can’t belive we got that. Even Sabbath tribute bands skip “The Wizard.”
Lyon: I’m pretty jealous of you guys.
Anthony: My goal of seeing Maiden, Priest and Sabbth is complete. It was fun chilling in NYC with Doug, Rob and Jason too.
Lyon: I imagine expectations were at an all-time high. How did the actual show hold up?
Anthony:Rival Sons was a decent opening act. Wish they got someone better but at least they didn’t suck.
Birdman: Yeah about that. I noticed Witchcraft’s vocalist sounds a lot like the Rival Sons singer, wouldn’t that be a better match?
Lyon: They will likely go down in history as the Beatles of metal.
Anthony: I’d love to see Witchcraft.
Lyon: I would have picked Skull Fist to open. What’s your number 3 Tony?
Tony’s #3: Venom INC and Necrophagia at Webster Hall

Lyon: Wow that sounds like a ton of fun. Big mosh pit?
Birdman: Now Venom Inc. has Mantas and Abaddon, right?
Anthony: Yes. They are both in it and not really much moshing, just screaming along to Venom classics. Necrophagia has been one of my favorite death metal bands since high school and seeing them live and interviewing Killjoy in person was such an amazing experience.  I saw both Venom and Venom Inc. this year and I’ll say that Venom Inc. had the better set and performance.
Birdman: They didn’t play anything from the Dolan albums?
Anthony: Other than Prime Evil’s title track the whole set was songs from the first two albums as well as singles from that era like “Warhead” and “Bloodlust.”
Lyon’s #3:  Fallujah and The Black Dahlia Murder at The Chance

Lyon: I have to say this show was godly.
Birdman: Plus Disentombed, an Aussie slam band that sounded heavier than Ingested.
Anthony: I almost went to that but school and money kind of got in the way. Plus, I’ve seen Fallujah and BDM before, both great live though.
Lyon: It was on the “Unhallowed Resurrection” tour where TBDM played Unhallowed front to back and fucking nailed it.Oh yeah, Disentombed is nuts too. What a nuts show. I’m a huge Fallujah fan, and this was basically within days of “Dreamless'” release. They played a few great songs from it.
Birdman: Still don’t see how Unhallowed is so influential, maybe cause it’s the first of it’s kind. There’s only one track on there that I genuinely love.
Lyon: I’m a huge fan of it.
Anthony: I could never get into it. Another reason why I didn’t go. More into Nocturnal and later BDM
LyonUnhallowed is my favorite American death metal album. I’m into most TBDM.
Birdman: Yeah, this just means I gotta see BDM again. Fallujah were great with their longer set.
Lyon: I think “Dreamless” is easily in the top 10 metal albums of the year, like, objectively or some shit.
Anthony: I need to hear it then. Their 2014 album made my top list of that year.
Lyon: But yeah, I love those bands and they all nailed their sets.

Music, Movies, More
