Throwback Thursday: The Pet Rock

The Pet Rock was a fad in 1975 that was so ridiculous it worked.

These smooth stones imported from Mexico’s Rosario Beach came with not only their own hay “bed,” but they were also presented in a cardboard “pet carrier” box that included a 32-page booklet on how to take care of your “new” pet.

Gary Dahl, the Pet Rock’s “inventor” got this idea (not surprisingly) from a night at a bar with his friends where the conversational topic was complaining about their actual living pets.

Dahl made millions in the short lived success of his “creation.” He ironically purchased the bar that sparked the idea, although several months later that ship too had sailed.

In 2013 the Pet Rock would become available again at small toy stores and the occasional 7-11 when Rosebud Entertainment would buy the rights of the bizarre novelty.

Throwback Thursday: Legends of the Hidden Temple

In the 90’s Nickelodeon had an awesome game show where kids would run through an Aztec themed obstacle course for prizes that ranged from awesome (Nintendo 64) to not worth the trials (a cheap bike).

That show was “Legends of the Hidden Temple.”

Hosted by Kirk Frogg and the show’s Easter Island inspired mascot “Olmec” (voiced by Dee Bradley Baker), teams of kids would partake in various rounds of challenges, before running the gauntlet in the final round, usually getting caught by the “temple guards” before completing the challenge. By winning the earlier contests. the children would be given “Pendants of Life” to give to the guards in order to progress through the stage; should they run into them.

Although most participants did not win, the show was a blast to watch and proved as a great alternative to “American Gladiators,” albeit in a bizarre way that only Nickelodeon could bring us.

Places to Eat: Kawaii

Just past Brooklyn’s roast beef emporium Brennan and Carr and right next to Jay and Lloyd’s of deli fame is Kawaii, a hidden sushi restaurant that can go ten rounds with the two heavyweights above.

The cozy little hole-in the wall serves an abundance of food with a large menu ranging from several types of teriyaki, a multitude of salads (mango kani anyone?) and a plethora of special sushi rolls such as the Bloody Mary, Godzilla and the AK-47 at great prices with large portions to boot.

On top of that, Kawaii also has an extensive all you can eat menu with nothing off limits for $20.00. The only catch is that if you’re going to take that route, your entire party must also be on board.

If that isn’t appealing enough, your sushi will be served in a wooden boat if a large enough quantity is ordered.

The flavors in the special rolls and salads pop with no ingredients overpowering nor canceling others out. Every hint of citrus, caviar, and fish really come together in unprecedented fashion.

At times some of the grilled dishes may come out a bit dry or overcooked, but the sauces are very nicely done and do a great job of making up for what is lost if you should run into that situation.

When it comes down to the nitty gritty, Kawaii is a winner fully loaded with variety, diversity and generosity showing in their prices, menus and food.

Fun fact: Kawaii is the Japanese word for “loveable,” “charming,” “adorable” or “cute.”

How appropriate.

Bonesaw/Zamboni Update

Hey Guys,

Long story short, The Bonesaw is going to continue to grow in 2015. I have not posted much in the last week due to Christmas chaos (which I rather enjoyed) and other things going on due to work and personal situations as we all have at some time or another.

Zamboni has been working on our debut album for quite some time now. Rob has been hard at work mixing the album and either him or Roger will be programming the drums for the final two tracks unless we can find some way to get him over to Rob’s to track them.

The plans have been set in motion for the annual Thrash Bash BBQ show which Zamboni hosts every Summer at Rob’s house in Wantage, NJ (If you don’t know about Thrash Bash BBQ, I have inserted a video package of this years event below made by Birdman Dan of the band “RROOAARRGH” who played at our first event). I will post updates to that and the Zamboni album as often as I can, but will of course lay in the shadows until things are solid.

As for The Bonesaw, I’ve been working on a few podcasts that will be featured on the site exclusively. Our guests being featured are currently some underground thrash metal bands but will continue to grow as time goes on. Lots of great stories from a few good friends involved in the music scene that I’m sure you guys will enjoy. Come January we should have some episodes ready to go for your listening pleasure. I’m currently in the midst of securing a podcast domain for an RSS feed so that the podcasts will be available on Itunes. The podcasts will also be backed up on YouTube.

I would like to thank everyone who has checked this out so far and for everyone who will give this “shitty new blog” a try.

Don’t forget the door is always open and if you want to write for us email your pitches to Bonesawzine@gmail.com.

Have a happy and healthy New Year,

Chris Butera

If you’re in the mood for pizza with class, look no further than Pizza D’Amore.

Located on Avenue U and Strickland ave, Pizza D’Amore’s exterior looks like an average sized shop, but it has so much more to offer.

The Brooklyn kitchen surprisingly takes up a small section of the eatery to make room for the traditional restaurant portion of the venue while the main dining area – resembling a cabin; takes up the front. The place is much bigger than it appears on the outside.

The food is delicious and the service is remarkable. Italian classics like eggplant parmigiana and calzones are cooked to perfection while healthier alternatives such as BLT wraps are stacked with flavor. If you’re eating in you’ll be surprised with complementary garlic bread garnished with a healthy dose of pesto sauce for snacking.

Even slices of pizza are served elegantly, with each individual slice on its very own plate.

Talk about class.
